How do I choose a topic for my argumentative paper?

Answer

How do I get started?

It's important to pick a good topic for argumentative assignments because topic choice affects the research and the quality of the argument. When looking for topics, keep the following points in mind.

  1. A good argumentative topic should have two reasonable sides. Even if an argument has two sides, the counterpoint should be reasonable from an academic standpoint.
  2. A good argumentative topic should have research to support both sides of the argument. Along with reasonable arguments, there should be credible research to back both the point and counterpoint for an argument.

Topic Examples

Two Reasonable Sides

Bad Topic: Students with special education needs should still receive a quality education.

This is a bad topic because the natural counterpoint-that students with special education needs do not deserve quality educational services-is not academically reasonable. While there may be a small subset of individuals who believe this counterpoint, the vast majority of reasonable human beings would not make this argument.

Good Topic: Students with special education needs should receive an equitable, inclusive education rather than receiving instruction in a separate classroom.

This is a good topic because there is debate regarding the benefit of keeping special education needs students in the classroom with all students versus having a separate classroom and lesson.

Researchable Argument

Bad Topic: The water at Camp Lejeune has caused Veterans to suffer from Dementia.

This is a bad topic because there is no scientific proof of Dementia amongst the health issues caused by Camp Lejeune. Certainly, as scientific research of Dementia improves, there may someday be a link. However, this topic has no credible, scholarly research to support it currently.

Good Topic: The United States Government should provide additional support to Veterans in the form of health and social benefits.

This is a good topic because there are legitimate, differing viewpoints on the level of support provided to Veterans and the differing levels of success of benefit programs provided.

Bad Topic: The world is round.

This is a bad topic because there is no credible research to back the counterpoint that the earth is flat. Certainly, there are many people who try to make the argument, but this example is both unreasonable and unable to be properly researched.
